Episode 1: "THAT THING" Soujun has built his whole life around one rule: never take risks. Scraping by on a pizza-delivery round through the lawless backstreets of MACHIDA, he keeps his head down, dodging the local yakuza and dreaming of a quieter life in the flower capital, TOKYO. But when his little sister Utaki — a pint-sized firebrand with the mouth of an old-school gangster — threatens to take a dangerous underworld job herself, Soujun caves and takes it in her place: a single black-market delivery, one sealed box he is told never to open. The handoff goes catastrophically wrong. Black-clad assassins cut down the men waiting to receive the package, and Soujun runs for his life. Cornered and desperate, he breaks the one rule he was given and opens the box — inside is an hourglass that cracks, spilling a strange ash he ends up swallowing: the Ash of Nue. Shot and doused in gasoline by his pursuers, Soujun should be dead. Instead, a heart engine roars to life inside his chest and he is reborn as a Fuser — fast, reckless, and grinning into every danger he once avoided. As his stolen power finally sputters out, an info broker named Alice guns down the last assassin, recovers the ash, and carries the collapsed Soujun off toward TOKYO.
