Episode 21

CHOFU is famous for its architecture and its seafood, and for one other thing. While a crowd loses its mind outside a shop, a hand slides into a bag. The cry goes up, a rookie Carabiner sets off after the thief against his sergeant’s advice, and Shiban leads him through the back alleys at a comfortable pace. The rookie was a distance-running prodigy and says so. Shiban goes up a wall instead, parkours to the roofline, dangles the wallet over him and explains that West CHOFU is the best hunting ground because the diva’s live show brings careless tourists in from across TOKYO. Then a man with a stitched grin and writhing dreadlocks is standing behind him. Spending money on Hiru-gumi turf is fine; taking it is not. Shiban walks home with nothing again. Home is Tama Cemetery, the ruined district through the tunnel, off-limits to tourists, where the discarded live. Abura has dragged back a drunk who kept laughing through a beating, and who now lurches at Shimii begging to lick something one more time. Buyo turns the talk to work. The Tousei-kai is tightening security across CHOFU, not for the concert but because keeping order is the deal that keeps the Tousei-kai alive. So: pickpocketing forever, or a new racket? He then names Shimii the crew’s real top earner, asks what he has found, and asks whether he is working with the Tousei-kai. Shimii panics, runs, and remembers where he has seen that man before.

DURRUN Episode 21, page 14: Buyo names Shimii the crew’s true top earner and, noting his soaring takings, asks if he has found a new racket of his own
DURRUN Episode 21, page 15: Buyo presses Shimii point-blank about colluding with the Tousei-kai; Shimii frantically denies any betrayal as the bound drunk rises again
DURRUN Episode 21, page 16: overwhelmed, Shimii bolts for the tunnel at full speed while Abura fells the flailing drunk with a full-swing pipe and Buyo marvels at his toughness
DURRUN Episode 21, page 17: running calms Shimii’s overloaded mind as he explains how sprinting reboots his frozen brain — then the reason for the freeze comes back to him
DURRUN Episode 21, page 18: flashback to yesterday in Zone 3 — an astonished buyer gasps that the item is real, and Shimii realizes the drunk is the man he sold it to
DURRUN Episode 21, page 19: insisting his sale has nothing to do with it, Shimii bursts out of the tunnel and bumps into Soujun and Yu-ri, who are headed for Tama Cemetery
