A narration opens with what Ten actually is: broken things touched by the Ash of Nue take on life, turn animal, and reclaim the purpose they were made for. The TOKYO government calls them Fusebeasts, unofficially, and Usuzumi goes pale when Ten takes its Ittan-momen shape — government treasure, unstealable, so this must be a wild one nobody collected. He warns that carrying it is worse than carrying a sword, asks once whether Yu-ri will hand it over, and answers his own question. Ten’s binding shape passes straight through him. A swordsman alone does not make TW18, he says, and ink fills the air until Yu-ri cannot see. Then Kikyou stops the fight, because she never ordered one, sends Usuzumi after Gen, and takes the Fusebeast as her own job. She has been profiling Yu-ri all night. A hired killer for the Yamori-gumi does not fit; a new outfit staking out MACHIDA does — a Fusebeast, a war with the GEJI-GUMI, and Alice, gone from the center three years. So Yu-ri learns why they are being chased, and that Soujun is still a secret. Then the terms: hand over the Fusebeast and go to Samejima Prison as an ordinary criminal, or refuse and be dropped into the Abyss in Zone 0 with whatever lives at the bottom. Exile, the Abyss, or a nil chance of beating her. He picks the third. Elsewhere Gen cuts Alice down mid-flight, and Kikyou takes Yu-ri by the throat.
